Information for Patients
"
Because of the ASTYM system I went from being an invalid to being fully functional and active (playing tennis, walking 18 holes, lifting weights, etc.) It’s a blessing and a miracle and I’m grateful beyond words. Thank you!”

What is the ASTYM System?
The ASTYM system* is a therapy approach which provides patients relief from a number of injuries and disorders (click on “Which diagnoses respond well to the ASTYM system” to see a listing). This treatment is effective for new injuries as well as persistent, nagging injuries. One of the most exciting aspects of the treatment is that significant improvement often occurs even in cases where other treatments have failed. The success of the System is documented for a wide variety of diagnoses and can be viewed in the Outcomes and Research Section.
*The ASTYM System originated as Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization or “ASTM” and was then known as ASTM AdvantEDGE before the name was shortened to ASTYMTM
.
Is This New?
The ASTYM system is well established clinically and through research. It has been used by rehabilitation professionals in clinical settings since 1996, and results of the treatment have been consistently tracked since that time. The data from this tracking confirms the remarkable results of this treatment. The ASTYM system was developed and researched under the direction of Thomas Sevier, MD, an athlete and specialist in musculoskeletal medicine. How Does it Work?
The ASTYM system focuses on repairing the normal soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.) and correcting abnormal soft tissue (scar tissue and other inappropriate fibrosis)which may interfere with movement and cause pain. Many people develop abnormal soft tissue from injuries, surgery, and repeated or “overuse” activities (which often occur in factory work, clerical jobs and sports).
Who Provides the ASTYM Treatment?
The ASTYM system is available from certified rehabilitation professionals around the country. These include physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and athletic trainers. Each clinician certified in the ASTYM system has undergone intensive training in this therapy approach. This training combined with the clinician’s other education and healthcare expertise provides the ideal opportunity for the patient to achieve maximum benefit from the System.
What is the Treatment Like?
A clinician certified to perform the ASTYM system evaluates each patient and determines whether the treatment is appropriate. During treatment the clinician uses the ASTYM instruments to treat not only the painful area but other areas that may contribute to the problem. The treatment is non-invasive, which means that the instruments are only used on the skin to affect the underlying soft tissue. During treatment, the patient feels the abnormal “bumpy” or “rough” tissue as the instruments glide over the skin, and notices the “smoothing out” effect over the course of the treatment as the abnormal tissue is eliminated. Patients occasionally experience some bruising in connection with the treatment which is visible evidence that the body is addressing the problem areas. Each patient also receives a custom-designed stretching and exercise program to help rebuild better tissue for his or her specific problem. Patients are typically seen for 7-11 visits, and many patients are excited to find they experience a significant change in their symptoms within the first four visits.

Which Diagnoses Respond Well to the ASTYM System?
Patients who are experiencing pain, loss of motion and/or loss of function following surgery, injury, cumulative trauma
disorders and chronic irritation/tendinitis often benefit from the ASTYM System. Some of the clinical diagnoses which have responded well to this treatment are:
